Teal Dragon Quilts

A world of Quilts and Dragons!

Sew Day!

It is a sew day, except I’ve signed up for a guild workshop.  The weather is horrendous and class has been delayed 2 hours….Freckles is going into daycare.  Hoping I don’t run into flooding.  I don’t do well with wet roads and usually decide to stay home, but I’ll go slow, watch for high water, and stay cool, calm and collected….Collected?  Where does that come from?  Is it the right word?  Am I remembering the saying wrong?

Not much going on in my quilting world with quilting.  I quilted two quilts at Quilt Your Own last week.  Then, I’ve been busy getting spreadsheets ready for guild meeting for sign ups to volunteer for our quilt show in May.  Joy of Quilts, May 5 and 6.  Going to be a great show.  I hope to enter a couple…

Been wearing my advertising chair hat.  That’s caught up, yeah!  Circulation for snail mail newsletters is done.  Website is pretty much up to date.  But we had a meeting last night and a few more things to add and tweak.  I’m trying to think what I have been spending my time on….

Yesterday, a good friend of mine and I went to look at tile and granite.  I found some stuff I really like.  All the pieces of the Teal Dragon House re-model are coming together.  Should be ready to show plans to hubby soon.  (he has to SEE it.  IT being everything from paint to hardware.)  My friend is helping with that, too.  You know me, make the decisions as I go along.  Hubby and I are NOT 2 peas in a pod.

oh yea, how could I forget…Letters to sellers for my real estate agents.  My brain just does not work like it used to.  Seems to take longer for me to get these done.  I work with 3 really good agents, so if you by chance need one, I know people!

Then there are the chores of owning a home and having a family.  My meals have been pretty tasty.  Last night, not so much.  Crock Pot Chicken, tasted good, but was so dry.  But wasn’t home long enough to roast it.  It will make good filler for arapas! (not sure if I spelled that right)

God Bless and thank you for reading my ramblings!

Asthma

This morning my old friend, asthma greeted me at about 2 AM.  Not a good night.  But I’ve changed how I greet this devil.  I rest.  Yep, no more trying to push through, no more continuing as if nothing is different.  I take a break.  I lay down in the recliner with a warm blankie.  I am still.  I do not worry about what I should or could be doing.  My focus is to get thru this, to breathe.  And you know, I’m fine now.  At about 10:00 I got all better.  Could have been that the rain stopped and the sun came out.  But I have tried this approach before and had similar results.

So this time the devil did not succeed in getting me off my goals!  My basting table is clear and Pa-Tune-ya is ready for quilting!  I missed the 15 minutes of sewing, but I was battling a demon.  The Monday “chores” were done…groceries, clothes washed….Freckles was walked, the Quilt Guild of Greater Houston website is up to date, I’m prepared for our board meeting tomorrow night.

The day may have started out like it was going to be a goal stopper, but it’s turned out great.

God Bless!

WAYWO Studio

No quilt progress, well a little. I basted a top for charity. Check out my MQM post. I learned my paisley motif with a little help from my friend!  I’m so pumped I may work on it tonight when I get home. Teal Dragon fireball is still a WIP.

But the big move forward is my studio.  It’s looking good. I cleared off my desk, put the monitor I never use in a closet. Freed up some space. Moved my turntable down to that end of the desk. DH says that since I like the vinyl better than digital, we can move to music room and put in soundboard cabinet. I took out a card table that was behind Briggita and moved her table to the wall beside my desk. My laptop goes on desk side closest to sewing table. I’m thinking this will be advantageous. I had a small Elfa shelf underneath the ironing board and in front of some filing carts. Moved that across the room and NOW I have access to everything.

Just realized this did not post!  Oh well, now I can tell you I’ve finished my paisley motif on the charity quilt.  It was fun!  And I can show you my studio.

TaB New Month

It’s March and my taxes are done!  Always a stressful time in my house.  But since I took over gathering the taxes together, it’s a lot LESS stressful. ha!  Our CPA has all the info I have and the day after I send it to her, guess what shows up in our mailbox.  Yep, another durn tax doc.  I really liked it when everyone had to get you all the docs you needed to file taxes by Jan 31….Oh well, they are done and won’t worry about them again until December 2016…But every year, I get a little better at getting the docs together.  This year, I think my checklist is complete, so from now on, get a tax doc, check it off the list, put it in the folder then copy the folder and hand over to CPA.  Is it really going to be that easy?

Getting better.  My goals lean toward me getting better.  Better at sewing, better at playing violin and piano, better health, better house cleaning habits.  This week I don’t feel like much happened in moving forward with my goals.  I saw Itzhak Perlman perform over the weekend.  I’ve been re-living the concert, thinking about how I can get my playing to look effortless.  I was told by a teacher that I looked like I was “so careful” as to where I placed my fingers on the violin.  In talking with him, I think it was not pleasant to watch.  He worked with me a while trying to get me to be “flippant” in my playing.  Don’t think it ever took.  The course I’m taking, the first step is to video myself playing to an audience of one.  Struggling here.  One, who do I trust/torture to do this and two, video….uh uh, no way, not going there, too much to do, got a concert have to practice….the left brain is screaming.  One of these days, my right brain will assert itself, and watch out world!

I also started Teal Dragon.  He is awesome!

Dragon Fireball

Dragon Fireball

This is the fireball he spits out.  It is so fun, the beads are so shiny and pretty.  I’m smiling the whole time I working on this. But it’s slow go.

Also gave a presentation about holding open houses.  I had killer open houses back when I was in real estate.  So my office wanted me to share what I did.  So I did, and there were 2 other presenters, young and let me tell you, they really kicked it up a notch!  I was old school.  They had it all on computers.  Where I had a bulletin board….they had tablets.  But it was fun, I also was able to sell some opportunities to win my guild’s Opportunity quilt.

I feel like this post has meandered all over the place, kind of like my week went.  There’s always THIS week to get it going again!

God Bless!

WAYWO Same-o-same-o

Well, not much new going on here. I think I’m stuck!  I added swimming to my routine and my days just disappear. I did start my dragon. He is awesome! A hundred smiley faces!  I finally put the WordPress app on my phone and iPad. Pretty cool to use my iPad.

I am working on a concert for Sunday. Last week we took an emergency trip to our vacation home because hubby thought there may have been a water leak. No leak. Wasted day for me.  It was Supposed to be a catch up day. Oh well, it was a nice drive. This Saturday will be my catch up day.

I’m working on a paisley motif to use in my quilting. I can draw one, but making it continuous and look good is proving to be a challenge. But I love this sort of challenge. It’s like learning a new piece of music. Very rewarding.

I also worked on some reports for the chairs I hold in my quilt guild. I’ve gone to several quilt shops and that has been a blast. It’s amazing the personality that each shop has. And the FABRIC!  Have I told you about my fabric addiction?

Thanks for reading this pictureless post. Hoping for a better week this week.  God Bless!

WAYWO Wall Flower

Mary Lou Weidman Class

Mary Lou Weidman Class

I am working on this wallhanging.  It is from a Mary Lou Weidman class.  I love Mary Lou.  We have the same name and it was shortened the same way.  Pretty cool!  But she is just a lovely person.  So positive, helpful and has that “can do” attitude.

I had mentioned earlier in one of my posts, that I love classes, but they become another UFO.  Well, here is one that didn’t!  I had the flower completely done by the end of class.  Last week I added the border.

I auditioned several fabrics, but this orange spoke to me when it went up on the wall.  Which brings me to color.  I love and adore color.  My favorite part of the quilting process is putting the colors together.  I, to this day, love to “color” with crayons.  But I know not why the colors work.  I have learned that value is what does the work, not the actual color.  If you mix lights, mediums and darks, you’ve got a good combo. I also know that most fabric you see in the stores are mediums.  If I see a light or dark amongst the mediums, I will grab!

Value is also dependent on what sits next to it.  In my wall hanging the only “dark” I see is the burgundy pot.  The only “light” I see are green on the outside left and on the inside right.  The orange in the flower is a print with a dark AND medium value.  This is IMHO(in my humble opinion).

Which brings me to another point.  Color and Value are very subjective.  Our eyes are unique and can see things very differently.  Again, I’m not book smart in how color works, but something happens when I see the “perfect” match.  It’s like the lightbulb going off in my head, except it happens in my eyes.  Weird, right?.

I quilted and put the binding on this week and should have it finished by next WAYWO post.

What are YOU working on?  Hope you get it to the finish.

God Bless.

TFK Automatic Buttonhole

I was right!  The Automatic Buttonhole was easier to master than the Manual Buttonhole.  I must say I feel like the Cheshire cat, I’m so pleased with myself!  ha!

Supplies were basically the same except for the foot.  Bernina 3A.

Flannel, stabilizer and Bernina 3A Buttonhole foot

Setup was the same.  I folded my flannel in half, pressed and inserted the stabilizer in-between.  I tried the marking line again, but that instruction makes no sense to me, so I did what I’m good at.  I winged it!

Here is a picture of my screen when I turn on the machine.

First screen when turn on machine

On the far right are the families of stitches.  Straight Stitch, Fancy Stitch, Alphabet, and there it is!  Buttonhole.  I touch that icon and voila’, a menu of buttonhole stitches.

Family of buttonhole stitches

Family of buttonhole stitches

Then there its that big “i”, well small but it’s quite large, hard to miss. I touch it and I get a language I do not understand.  Hieroglyphics, maybe?

What does all this mean?

What does all this mean?

At the bottom is the “man” icon.  We tried that one last week…yuck.  Wait, “REC”?  Isn’t that an abbreviation for record?  Let’s press that one.

REC appears on right side of my screen by picture of my presser foot!

REC appears on right side of my screen by picture of my presser foot!

The “REC” pops up over on the left by the picture of my pressure foot.

So now, I’m going to be brave and set my piece up and give it a whirl.  First try, meh, not too good, but I think I got it.  Second try, oops, I don’t got it.  Third try, I got it!

Place the red marker on the foot at the spot you want the buttonhole to stop.  Press AND Hold, (I usually forget that one) the foot free sewing button.  (I think it has another name, but too lazy to look it up!)  Once the machine starts going, you can release the button.  When the needle reaches the marker press that button again.  Don’t have to hold.  Now, this is how the magic happens.  Always remember to do this.  Press one time the reverse button. It’s just below the foot free button.  This is what tells the machine how far to stitch!  Now finish this button hole by pressing and holding the foot free button.  Once the machine starts you may let go.  The machine will stop when the buttonhole is complete!

Now move over a little bit. (the fabric) Press and hold that foot free button, release once machine starts.  Like magic you will have a second buttonhole, just like the first!

My buttonholes. (the ones in the middle of the two mess-ups.

My buttonholes. (the ones in the middle of the two mess-ups.

I snipped the centers to make the “holes”.  No one said anything about that.  Now I’m ready to finish that Snuggler!  I’ll let you know how it goes.

God Bless!

Machine Quilting Monday

Want to learn a new motif?  Want to improve or be brave enough to try Free Motion?  My Monday blog is devoted to Machine Quilting, mostly Free Motion.  It’s a technique I am constantly trying to improve.  Have you tried a stitch regulator?  Did you like it?  I tried it, don’t like it at all.  It’s like I have a ball and chain around my foot.  IMHO people put too much emphasis on PERFECT.

So, if you are looking for someone to help you quilt perfectly, (grinning) look else where.  My philosophy is to look at your work from a galloping horse.

Where to start?  When I took my first free motion class, I learned to meander, first.  Quilting in a wandering path without crossing any stitched lines.  I was overwhelmed.  Not crossing a line, seemed to be a challenge for me.  The easiest motif for me is the cursive capital letter “L”.  Click on this LINK to see the video.

Next week I’ll show you 4 more.  The videos will get better, or else I will just take pictures of the process….

You Are Enough

I believe this, especially about everyone has stories, everyone’s life is exciting. I think it’s why I post so sporadically. If I’m not enthusiastic about writing, why write? Looking forward to blogging again!

The Daily Post

I recently told a friend of mine — a single mom who works in the healthcare industry — that she should write a blog about her amazing life. Her response to me was, “It’d be the most boring blog in the world. I’m nothing special.” That’s a direct quote. Nothing special? She’s raising three kids on her own, works in an ER in a massive city hospital, speaks three languages, and she studied opera in college. If she’s not special, I don’t know who is.

Her response really surprised me, and it reminded me of someone from my past who was the flip side of the self-confidence coin.

In my early 20s, I was taking a class with an outrageously flamboyant teacher. She found her life so interesting and loved telling us wild stories of the minutiae of her day. She could probably tell a story about boiling water and make it…
