Teal Dragon Quilts

A world of Quilts and Dragons!

Been busy!

Humming along.  Lots of progress with my quilting.  I almost got stuck on the quilt for a cousin, but like magic, it got done.  No, really, like magic.  The quilt uses huge blocks that are made up of 16 smaller blocks.  I needed 6 of the big blocks to make the quilt.  I did a lot of sewing a to b and c to d, then b to c.  I then had rows for the blocks.  Next was 1 to 2 and 3 to 4, then 2 to 3.  I then had the big blocks.  I had 6 of everything, 6 a’s, 6 ‘bs, etc.  When I’m sewing it seems like a lot, so I count how many I have done and how many to go.  Something like this…One, six to go; two, four to go, three, three to go.  Then the magic happens!  four, TWO to go.  The small blocks are only 6 1/2″ so it’s not like there is a whole lot to stitch that will take hours.  But in my mind…

I have a book called “The Inner Game of Music”, it’s modeled after the one titled “The Inner Game of Golf”.  Maybe I should do one “The Inner Game of Quilting”?  The books are about ways to be better thru the use of the brain.  With music one of the ways was to THINK about practice.  In detail..Imagine holding the instrument, playing each note. Visualizing.

The “little voice” inside my head is a fear monger.  I shush mine with loud positive affirmations.  I’ve been successful this month!  Hope you are too!  Enjoy the pictures of what I have done since my last post!

Working my Plan

Feeling pretty good about where I am in my goals for 2017.  I’ve finished 2 UFO’s.  One is for Comforters, so that one is a two for one.  Not sure what my next UFO will be, most likely my grand niece’s.  Right now I started a “promised” quilt for my cousin’s granddaughter.  Hoping I have lots of time to work on it this week and it may be ready to quilt by the weekend.  I finished the embroidery stitches for my Jane Sassaman piece, Mending Heart.  It is basted and ready to quilt.  I want to hurry and get it done, but I want to make my self take the time to practice quilting stitches.  I’ve planned out what I want in each section.  So after I’ve done the 9 patches for the disappearing 9 patch, I’ll quilt Mending Heart.

I have 2 birthday blocks and a Shoebox block to do.  This is the last month of our Shoebox challenge.  We start another in April.  My fabric for the next challenge is ready to go!  I need to finish 2 bee comforter quilts to be up on that goal.  I will focus on one and see where it leads.

I was gone last weekend to visit a friend I’ve known since childhood.  I stopped my Spanish lessons and haven’t started back, but maybe tonight might be a good time to start again.  I’ve been practicing for my concert in Pasadena.  I always feel so empowered when I have a good practice session.  My shoulder is holding up, but then I don’t practice hours.  Helps having just one orchestra and not 2 or more.

The website I manage is up to date with all the pictures and events.  I’ve added the pages I needed to add.  It is ready for the next meeting.  Taxes are in the process of being done.  I’ve done the challenging parts, the rest is just fill in the spread sheet.

One month gone and the second is half way through.  Where are you in your goals?  I’m still pumped about getting mine done.  🙂

God Bless!

What’s next?!

I have two quilts that were UFO’s that are almost done.  They should both be done by Sunday.  Now where do I go.  What project will I pick?  I have several that need to be done, and all that I want to do….

I have 2 quilts I promised to my mother’s cousin for her granddaughter that she wants by May.  It would be nice to get these done before the deadline and May is only 4 months away.  Then there is my niece’s t-shirt quilt she gets for graduating from high school.  She is now a sophomore in college…

Beginning of Allison's quilt

Grand-Niece's Quilt

Grand-Niece’s Quilt

I also have my Grand-niece’s Big Girl quilt for when she turned 7.  She will be 9? in June.  Almost time for her little brother to reach 7!

Then there is my brother’s quilt.  I created the design and have been working on it for a few years, now.

How do I decide?  Any suggestions?  I’ve thought about splitting my time with these, but I still have Charity quilts and bee challenges to do as well.

So then I think maybe I should do the one furthest along.  That would be my Grand-niece’s, but then I run the risk of running out of time to do those quilts for my mother’s cousin.  Year and a half ago it seemed so doable when I said yes….

I think I will do the one for my mother’s cousin.  I have the fabric and will do the disappearing 9-Patch.

Staying on Track

It’s mid-January and I thought I would take a quick peek at my goals…I know I should have them in front of me, but they are in a file on the computer.  I should print before I close the file.  ANYWAY, I’m doing ok.  I have a finished project already for 2017.  It’s not a UFO, but it was never in the UFO pile.  I have a comforter quilt that should be done by guild, only the binding left.  I have another top that needs borders quilted, label and binding and it’s done.  I sew 15 minutes almost every day.

So, why do I not sew 15 minutes everyday?  Life, work…real estate is taking more of my time.  So something has to give and regretfully, it is sewing.

My guild website is up to date with all the info I have.  I am working on a “how to” page for community rewards programs and am waiting for more info.

I blog, but not 5 days a week.  Again, Life happens, plus when I blog is usually late night or early morning. I’ve been choosing to sleep! haha.

Haven’t looked at Corel Draw or learning new things on Brigetta.  Don’t want to be a whiney baby, but my shoulder hurts when I play the violin, therefore, I don’t want to.  I will try for 15 minute intervals this next week.

I walk Freckles everyday.  It’s kind of hard to turn him down, he’s so sweet!  I do do Spanish, but it’s about 5 minutes…one DuoLingo Lesson.

This week I will focus on 15 minutes of sewing, violin practice, blogging and Spanish.  Wish me luck!

God Bless

WAYO Dragons

Teal Dragon. working the red fireball with red beads.

Teal Dragon. working the red fireball with red beads.

Another busy week.  Beginning to wonder if there are any other kind.  Just got in from a rehearsal and am so ready for bed.  But I just don’t want to give up on these posts.  So, here I type.  I think it will be short and sweet!

I finished the Saturday at the Improv and Prairie Girl! I’ve also found some more UFO’s and kits!  More on that later.  The only hand work I have left is my dragon, my wool project, make that TWO wool projects, (The Woolie Bees are doing heart blocks for the Guild Auction in 2017). and cross stitching the nieces and nephews names on the stockings.

Next up for the machine is the orange pineapple quilt.  It is so yummy, I can’t wait to get started.  But I’m thinking I will baste and machine quilt a comforter quilt first.

This weekend I have a concert to attend.  (I’m in the audience this time), so maybe I’ll have a relaxed weekend, no other commitments.  Hope you find some “slow” weeks!

God Bless!

WAYO This Blog

Well, it’s the day before this post goes out and I am writing it now….No posts in the queue.  Not time to panic, yet.  But in quilting I’m working on a lot!

Batik Challenge finished and ready for bee meeting in March.

Batik Challenge finished and ready for bee meeting in March.

To start with, I finished the Batik Challenge the end of last week.  Then I quilted a little wall hanging in time for my MQM post.  I got the binding sewn on and will use a decorative stitch to sew it to the front.

Saturday At the Improv, ready to sew the binding down.

I went to my first Woolie Bee Meeting last week.  I spent the time working on my Sue Spargo piece.  It was about 3 hours of solid handwork and visiting with friends.  I got a leaf finished and started sewing on vine.  This is going to be a challenge to figure out what stitches to use and where to use them.  I want to put more beads and will need to decide where they will look the best.

It was fun, but not one of my favorites.  On Saturday, I finished up my Disappearing 4 patch blocks for bee.  They turned out really nice.  I had to pin to make the seams match up, but then they did very nice.  Love this block, may use it again!

I’m almost done appliquéing my little prairie girl.  She is so sweet!  Love pink and brown.  I only have the left side of the apron and the sleeve to appliqué down.  And it will be ready for the next step!

Hand work seems to be taking over my life!  But soon I will be piecing the Shoe Box Club and oh!  I almost forgot.  I joined an online sewing group.  The Splendid Sampler, 2 blocks a week!  What was I thinking?  It will be fun.  Lot of my friends are doing it, so we’ll have some great show and tells!

What are you Working on?  Let me know in the comments.

TaB UFO Count

Top ready for basting.

Top ready for basting.

51.  That was the number of my UFO’s January 1, 2016.  I was thinking it was going to be triple digits.  Cleaning out my studio closet, I found treasures!  Burp Rags, (DONE) I talked about in my post yesterday.

Bright Colorful baby quilt top

But I also found a small pineapple quilt top in gorgeous, bright colors.  All it needs is a border and it’s ready for quilting!  Day at the Improv, is ready for basting.  Mardi Gras Crazy quilt is ready for embellishing.   Three Sisters (pictured at the top) is a top and I have the backing and label ready to go!  These are just a few and most are close to finish!

A wall hanging ready for basting!

A wall hanging ready for basting!

31. That is the number of projects I have planned but not started.  I have the pattern and fabric or I have a kit.  UFO goal is well on the way!

One of my goals —

I finish the quilts I’ve promised to others.  I make a list of all promised quilts.  The list includes project name, recipient, where I am in the process, what is needed to move forward, and a time frame for completion.  It is a little further along now!

I found the quilt tops and fabric for quilts I’ve promised to others.  For my best friend since I was 7, I have 3 tops that her mom did ready for backing and basting.  Her mom and my mom were best friends.  They did a lot of things together, and I’m thinking I’m seeing some of our little girl clothes in the blocks!

I haven’t worked on charity quilts this week, except for the Burp Rags.  But I have 5 quilts for the Gabriel Project, so I am halfway there on that part of it.  I haven’t completed a comforter quilt for January.  February, it’s early, so I’m hoping I do better.  For my bee, I have 2 sets ready to be made into tops and my string piecing, is almost a complete set.

Business plan is hanging on by a thread!  I’ve kept the blog going, but this post is last minute.  It’s the Tuesday before it posts.  I finished’s Wednesday’s just a few minutes ago.  This weekend I have a concert, so having time to catch up on posts will be a challenge.  I will just keep plugging away and maybe some of it will get done.  Already, I feel the pull to go practice….

Brigitta, music and health goals are holding steady.  No progress, really, but not falling back either.  I did practice a Spanish lesson this weekend between rehearsals!  But once is not enough to make what I learned stick….

I am determined to make these goals a reality.   Are your goals still on track?

God Bless!

WAWO Handwork and Bindings

My Dragon I am going to Bead. so outside my box. I love the bling, but beading is a new art for me!

The Shoe Box Club, Birthday Blocks were finished for bee…the disappearing 4 patch did not get done.  I’m working on it this week.

Batik Challenge about 1 hour left to complete!

Batik Challenge about 1 hour left to complete!

This weekend I worked on the binding for the Batik Challenge.  It’s so close to being done, I can taste it!

In my sorting my UFO’s, I found all kinds of treasures, more on that with the TaB post.  One such was 2 burp rags.  The middle is minky and so soft.  All that needed doing was closing the seam.  That took all of 30 minutes and BOOM! UFO done!

Minke centers for baby's face. They are so soft!

The Prairie Girl for my grandniece is getting closer to a being done, so then I can move on to the NEXT step for her “Big Girl” quilt.

My mother was big into crochet and she made these beautiful, LARGE stockings to give to family and friends.  Needless to say, they were a huge hit.  It’s really nice, because every Christmas, people are remembering my sweet mama.  I found the pattern and I found someone to sew the stockings.  We did some for my best friend from way back.  She had added a son-in-law and grandson, since my mom’s passing.  The person crocheting the stockings does not do cross stitch, which is the method used to put the names on the stockings.  I do the cross stitch.  Well, now I have 3 more to do for my grandnieces and grandnephew!  Family history in the making….

Beads for my dragon. Found out today I am a Black Dragon, born in the year of the Red Chicken and I am also a Water Dragon. go figure!

Also during the big UFO sort, I found my beads.  Next UFO to bring to the next step is my Teal Dragon Quilt.  It’s going to take a lot of beads, but it is going to be so cool!  I decided to add the beads first because I don’t plan on quilting “in” the dragon, just around him.  Wish me luck, this is outside my box, but a technique that I’ve been wanting to learn for a while.

Do you have any techniques you have procrastinated learning?  I would love to hear the tale.

God Bless!

TaB Time to settle in for the Long Haul

Don’t know about you, but my January is flying by!  Had a concert this past weekend with the Galveston Symphony Orchestra.  The music was really challenging.  Especially The Waltz by Ravel.  When we sight read it at rehearsal back in December I was Really excited.  A NEW piece I hadn’t played or heard.  That’s rare at this point in my music career.  It brought back memories of getting new music at piano lesson.  It’s like a newly purchased yard of fabric…endless possibilities!

The concert went well and the audience seemed to love it.  The performance reminds me why I like to play.  The adrenaline is addicting, the applause is rewarding, but knowing you played the best you could and you gave it your all, it’s the best feeling in the world.  I was on top of the mountain.  I was unstoppable.  I made a difference.  I was part of something bigger than myself.  So all the slow, tedious practice is worth it to get to the top of this mountain.

I’ve brought all my projects back from our vacation home and have added all, except for the last batch to my UFO list.  Maybe by the time this is published I will have all those added.  Then it’s onto my closet that has a top shelf ALL the way around that is filled with UFO’s.  Once that is done, I’ll pick my other 6 UFO’s for the year.  This is tough, I want to do them ALL, NOW.  But I STILL haven’t sewn for four hours a day.  I work this week to sew 1 hour every day for 7 days!  (I’ll let you know how it goes!)

I am more active in my Guild, besides webmaster, I have taken on the Advertising and Publicity Chairs.  The website needs to be updated, but I am within the parameters I set.  No proofers have stepped up, and haven’t started on improving the pages.  I’ve been posting the Guild speakers and workshops on our FB Page and in our group.  I did go to the Friday meeting.  Guild goals are going very well.  🙂

Charity Quilts, some good and some not so good.  Business Plan and Brigetta are doing well.  Music and Health are slowly getting going, and Spanish, well, it’s on the back burner….

Seems like I have slowed down from my Huge start.  I expected this.  Life and concerts get taken care of first.  But my habits I’ve built are solid and I am ready to add more.  First up is the water challenge.  Mine is very small.  I’m adding a glass of water, 8 ounces, to my morning routine.  It’s huge, because I don’t drink water.  At night I’m adding brushing my puppy.  I’m hoping this will cut down on the shedding and help with keeping the house nice and tidy.

Are you achieving your goals!

God Bless!

WAYWO Mock Mola Applique

Tiki Dreaming

Tiki Dreaming

A class with Cathy Miller taken in November, 2015.  It’s almost done.  It just needs quilting and binding, and it will hang on my studio wall.  The class was a blast and it was enlightening talking with another quilter/musician.  I am a violinist, have been since I was 10.  That’s all I wanted to do, was play my violin.  There was this confidence thing that I still struggle to overcome, and the teachers wouldn’t let me, or strongly discouraged a degree in Performance.  I took it as a subtle hint I wasn’t good enough.  My quilts are good enough.  I’ve never worried that they are not perfect.  I will, like most of us point out my mistakes, to fellow quilters.  But the fact that it’s there does not really “bother” me.  Have I told you I love to quilt!  I love to play my violin, too, but it’s a tedious process of playing slowly and working up the tempo, playing it 3 to 6 times with out a mistake.  Just ask my husband, it’s painstaking!  And then I reach that wall, where I just can’t seem to go any faster, but yikes!  The performance tempo must be faster.  So, I slow it back down and start again.  Most of the time, I have to wing it, fake it, because there is not enough time to do all this.  But in the end, the performance goes well, and I along with everyone else am happy.

Quilting is completely different.  I mess up, I fudge and I keep going.  Onto the next project.  On my galloping horse everything looks lovely.  I have not figured out why I approach my two arts so differently. But I am starting to accept less than perfection in my performance and also starting to strive for accuracy in my quilting.  Maybe this journey will lead me to the happy middle in both my arts!

Echo Quilting and Waves are the quilt plan

Echo Quilting and Waves are the quilt plan

The quilting in the mock mola is going to be echoing the shapes and waves in the borders.  Hoping to have it done by week’s end, at least the quilting!

What are you working on and if it’s not perfect, does it drive you crazy?

God Bless!
