FFF Music

on February 19, 2016

Music is me.  I am music.  I LOVE music.  Nine times out of 10, music will be playing in my house.  The one in 10 is when DH has the TV blaring.  Ha!  What kind of music?  All music.  Rap is really a challenge, tho.  It’s so raw and angry.  IMHO, the artists should rewrite and rewrite and rewrite to let some of that anger go. I don’t like talk so much either and to me rap seems wordy.  I do love rhythm, and swimming this week I’ve discovered rap is great for kicking.

My favorite music is symphonic, orchestral, strings, winds, brass and let’s not forget the percussion!  I love to play it AND listen to it.  Some genres, like Opera, I only love to play.  But symphonic can get my heart to sing.  Favorite composer is Ludwig Van Beethoven.  My favorite work of his is his Symphony #5.  His music is always fun to play, because he gives 2nd violins major parts that are playable.  And they fit like a glove to what’s going on around in the other sections.  Have you seen the commercial where Intel integrates Beethoven’s 4 note motif with their 4 note motif?   I LOVE it!

I have several types of listening to music.  There’s the one where it is in the background.  There’s the one where I’m actively involved in listening.  I go to the here and now place.  It’s only the music that is playing right now, not what’s past and not what’s coming up.  It’s me and the music, no one else.  This type listening inspires me to play better, to be a better musician.  I don’t have enough time to enjoy this type of listening too often.  Another type of listening is, “how do they do that?”  What are they doing and how can I make my violin sound like that?  How does the 2nd violin part fit with the rest of the orchestra?  What is the tempo?  This type listening is usually done with my part in hand so I can follow along and really hear my part with the rest of the orchestra.  Then, there’s always the air guitar listening, like no one is watching.  I do love rock and roll, you know, the Beatles, the Who, the Doors, the Rolling Stones.

Music is an important part of my life.  My parents were not musicians.  They did not have musical families.  When I said I wanted to play violin, they were wondering where the heck I got that idea?  I was only 10, but I knew THIS is what I want to do with my life.

48 years later, it’s still an important part of my life, I’ve just added a couple of things to the mix.

God Bless!
