It seems like it’s been a while for me.  But that’s because I had all of January posts for TFK done by the first week.  Well, I went in today to look at what’s coming up and Woa! only 1 post scheduled and that one is for Monday!  I knew this was coming, not really a shocker, but I feel so ill prepared.

Today is the securing function and the zigzag.

The opening screen after turn on machine.

This is the opening screen on the right.  I played around and tried to figure out the securing function.  Seems like a waste to me, but the button to start it is on the bottom left of the machine.  Looks like a knot.

Securing function is center black button on right. Looks like a knot. When pressed, the "knot" appears on bottom left of screen.

When you sew, the needle does a little “hop”.  Like a typewriter doing a backspace.  Anyone remember typewriters?  If you press the Pattern End button (bottom left of machine/top right black button), the machine will come to a stop after it has secured the stitches.

Pattern end is "on". Machine will stop when it finishes whatever stitch it is sewing.

It’s actually a cool feature and I had fun playing with it especially in the zigzag stitches.

For the zigzag stitch, make sure you are using the correct foot.  The number one will work.

Select the zigzag stitch, it is #2. The picture of the straight stitches will change to zigzag.  The numbers on the top left and top right are the stitch length and width.  The silver knobs on the right control these.

I REALLY had fun playing with these.  Did you see the cool pic at the top of the page?  When you turn either of these knobs, the corresponding number on the screen changes color to yellow and the picture of the stitches show what they will look like.  When you drop your needle into the fabric, the pattern begin comes on the screen.  You can sew like this all day, until you stop or press the Pattern End button.

So then I actually started sewing trying the silver knobs.  The first line of stitching is the securing stitch, not much happening. The second line of stitching, I adjusted the knobs, then sewed.  The third line of stitching, I changed the knobs while sewing.  Very interesting.

2nd line starts normal, gets really narrow, then wide, then normal and short

3rd line of stitching is normal, then short, then longer. Then narrow to wide to narrow and longer.

I could have spent hours just playing with this, but alas, I Must move on!

Where do you use zigzag stitches?  I use when I piece batting, when attaching a ribbon or cording to fabric.  (I think it’s called couching?) I’ve also used the satin stitch in machine appliqué.  It was a beautiful little quilt for my first grandniece.  I’ve looked for pictures, but no luck.  One of my UFO’s I found has the monofilament thread and a zigzag on the appliqué.  It’s barely visible!

Hope you enjoy playing with the zigzag!

God Bless!
