Teal Dragon Quilts

A world of Quilts and Dragons!

WAYWO Wednesday

WAYWO is What are you working on?  Wednesdays my posts will be about my current projects.  I have quite a few going at one time.  It’s thrilling!  So many choices.  That’s why I have lists and timelines.  I usually pick the one that needs to be done the soonest.  Today, I picked one that needs to be done by June.  My great niece is turning 7.  She needs a “big” girl quilt.  Her sister got one two years ago.

As you can see, it will be a lot to live up to!  I have the center medallion and it is ready to appliqué.  I’ve learned a lot about appliqué in the time between these two quilts.  I’ve tried needle turn appliqué and it’s too challenging.  The one on the right I used Freezer Paper and a glue stick.  It worked, but it was not easy to get the paper out and I had to cut the backs of some of the fabrics.

Since that project, I was introduced to Shabby Fabrics and their videos on appliqué.  Thanks to a friend in my bee, I am happy with my appliqué!

She had given a demo for our guild, and she gave me the website where she learned.  Click here for the first video.  They are on youtube.com and there is a series of 8 videos.  But as you can see from the finish on my bird, it well worth the effort of viewing the videos.

This technique uses starch and freezer paper.  The trick is to get the templates just like what you want your appliqué to be.  Using two pieces of freezer paper pressed together makes the template stronger.

Another trick is the silk thread.  Supposedly the thread disappears into the fabric making the stitches almost invisible.  This is what I hated about my needle turn, unless I found the perfect thread, the stitches were visible, no matter how small or close to the edge.

Now I have some hand work to work on when sitting.  Ha!  When do I sit?

Thanks for stopping by and please let me know what you are working on.  We Quilters love show and tell!

God Bless!
